Background
The election took place after a prolonged caretaker period, new delimitation following the 2023 census and intense legal and political disputes.
Main competitors
PML-N, PPP and numerous independent candidates were central to the contest. Many candidates associated with PTI ran as independents after the party did not contest with its traditional bat symbol.
What happened?
Independent candidates, many backed by PTI, won the largest number of general seats. No party secured a majority, and post-election party position became entangled with coalition choices and reserved-seat litigation.
Government formation and aftermath
PML-N formed a coalition government with support from PPP and other parties. Shehbaz Sharif was elected prime minister in March 2024.
Why this election matters
The election produced a fragmented mandate and underlined the importance of symbols, candidate status, reserved seats, coalition arithmetic and judicial decisions in converting votes into parliamentary power.
